Subject: Hyde Amendment to H.R.1646
Dear Congressman Burr:
When the House considers the State Department authorization bill
(H.R. 1646), I urge you to support the amendment that will be
offered by Chairman Hyde to protect President Bush’s pro-life Mexico
City Policy.
The Mexico City Policy, which was in effect for eight years prior to
the Clinton Administration, was restored by President Bush on
January 22. Under this policy, in order to be eligible for
U.S. “population assistance,” a private organization must sign a
contract promising not to perform abortions (except to save the
mother’s life or in cases of rape or incest), lobby to change the
abortion laws of host countries, or otherwise “actively promote
abortion as a method of family planning.”
