alt="[Topic: 2nd Amendment] " src="/log/archives/topicguns.gif"
width="117" align="right" border="0" />According to a 1995
National Safety Council study, the leading causes of death for
children ages 0-14 were (in order):

Motor Vehicle Accidents (3,059)

Drowning (1,060)

Fires & burns (833)

Mechanical suffocation (459)

Ingestion of food or foreign objects (213)

Firearms (181)

Further, about 30 innocent people (per year) are tragically
killed in the mistaken belief they are intruders. But trained
police mistakenly kill 330 innocent people each year.

Would anyone argue that police should be disarmed because
they’re dangerous?

Would anyone argue that children should be prohibited from
swimming or riding in cars?

…even though armed police, swimming, and car rides result
in more tragedies each year than gun accidents?

It can be argued that police, bodies of water, and
automobiles serve positive purposes that are greater than the
accidental deaths they cause. But the same thing can be argued
for privately owned guns. Each year, more than 2 million
criminal acts are prevented by gun owners.

Please Note: This is a brief story, not a complete
argument. These “Facts of the Day” are used in
context to make a complete argument in a brand new,

According to the Government Accounting Office, background checks, such as those authorized by the Brady Law, have no effect on criminals. The Brady Law has denied firearms to thousands of individuals, with over 50% of the denials coming from administrative snafus, traffic violations, or reasons other than felony convictions. And in the first 18 months after the Brady Law was implemented, there were only seven successful prosecutions against people making false statements on Brady handgun purchase forms. Background checks don’t effect criminals at all, but they do hurt law abiding citizens!

Background checks

Bonnie Elmasri wanted a gun to defend herself from a husband who was threatening to kill her, but she couldn’t get one right away because a legally mandated 48 hour waiting period was required to do a background check on her. The police were aware of Elmasri’s situation, so she hoped they could protect her until she got her gun. The next day her husband killed her and her two sons.

…Get the facts.

Women, in particular, need guns for safety. In 89.6% of violent
crimes where women are the intended victims, the offender does not
have a gun; and only 10% of rapists carry a gun. So armed women
have an advantage over their attackers.

A Justice Department study discovered that of more than 32,000
attempted rapes, 32% were actually successful. But when those
women were armed, only 3% of the attempted rapes were
successful.
