On Compassion

Quote

Libertarians

It’s amazing to me how many people think that voting to have the government give poor people money is compassion. Helping poor and suffering people is compassion. Voting for our government to use guns to give money to help poor and suffering people is immoral self-righteous bullying laziness.

People need to be fed, medicated, educated, clothed, and sheltered, and if we’re compassionate we’ll help them, but you get no moral credit for forcing other people to do what you think is right. There is great joy in helping people, but no joy in doing it at gunpoint. ~Penn Jillette

I am not a conservative!

Libertarians
I’m getting tired of people accusing me of being a conservative. I am not. I am a Libertarian.
  • I am not opposed to gay marriage. I don’t think the government should be in the business of issuing marriage licenses to anybody.
  • I am in favor of ending the insane “Drug War.” Didn’t our country learn anything from the first time we tried prohibition?
  • I am in favor of lower taxes, abolishing the current income tax and replacing it with a fair tax.
  • I am a capitalist pig. We have too much government regulation and we need a lot less interference in our economy.
  • I was critical of many of the things George W. Bush did during his Presidency. (Medicare prescription drug coverage and No Child Left Behind just to name two.)
  • Criticizing Barack Hussein Obama‘s policies does not make one a conservative. I think Obama is as red as Chairman Mao and he’s taking our country in the wrong direction.
  • Listening to Rush Limbaugh on the radio and watching FOX News does not make anyone a conservative.

I encourage everyone to take the World’s Smallest Political Quiz and see where you are on the political map. My political views place me at second base on the diamond.

Could America use a few Lessons in Liberty?

Libertarians

Bob Barr says America could use a few Lessons in Liberty! After what I’ve seen the past few weeks with government bailouts, bank takeovers, voter fraud and more, I’m inclined to agree with him. I may just have to vote Libertarian again in November. The only incumbent I can vote for is my own Congressman, Todd Platts, who voted against the bailout.

Are we really fighting a war in Iraq?

More on the so-called House debate on Iraq

There’s allegedly a debate about Iraq in Congress today. I’m sitting here trying to think about what Harry Browne would say about the overly dramatic political opera playing on C-SPAN as I write this. I conclude that today, we all miss Harry Browne’s clear, moral voice.

I’m not ready to join the Kool-Aid crowd on the far left, but sometimes I question the Republicans motives.
